That’s the Spirit!
Merry Christmas and end of year reflections…
Well it's that time of year, where we're attending year end functions, wrapping up projects, finishing up what we can before the holidays, tying up loose ends. It can all feel a little overwhelming and quite chaotic at times, but it's been a part of our lives for quite some time now (especially in 'Western' countries), socially ingrained in a way. On the plus side, it's also a sign that most of us will have some sort of break from our usual day to day and get to spend some quality time with our loved ones.
How it all plays out, and how this time of year affects you though, is really up to you. You can choose to say yes to every gathering and commitment, OR you can be selective and really honour yourself, your energy and decide on engaging in the events with the people you really want to spend your time with... quality over quantity, and you shouldn't feel bad for turning down some things, just be upfront and honest, it will serve you (and other's) in the best way.
Remember that not everyone is in the same boat as you, maybe this is a very lonely time for some people who don't have big families or friends to spend this time with. It could have also been a very difficult year for some, even yourself, so try to be a little kinder and more understanding, with yourself and others. A simple text message or a box of chocolates to someone you know who may need a little extra care and love really goes a long way. Spread the Christmas cheer!
As we take time to reflect on this year that has passed, it can be a default to focus on all the things we didn't do, the stuff that wasn't so lekker and all the kak we had to go through, so really make an effort to rather shift your attention to all the good that has happened and the growth and change that has come from all the challenges or difficulties. Find a deeper sense of gratitude especially for all the people in your life that have been there to simply listen, support or hold you through the tough stuff. And even though you may not be fully into your training or practice sessions, the little break from 100% is also a good thing, rest, recover, take movement snacks! Simple walks with your dog or family member after a big Christmas meal are also a great way to keep your momentum going. I do recommend continuing to pay attention to your nervous system at this time of year, (especially when we are with family and that one Uncle or cousin who gets on your nerves is around...lol) so focus on things like meditation, Qigong, Yoga Nidra's, restorative Yoga and of course breathwork to stay calm and centered.
Whether you are following a specific religion, or not, or even interested in a few, they all have something of value to offer us, as long as they do not create separation, rigidity an 'Us vs Them' mentality within ourselves. And none of them are more 'right' or 'better' than the other, they are simply systems to provide structure, meaning and a sense of devotion and faith to something higher than ourselves, that which can't really be explained, God, spirit, Universe, consciousness... Spirituality is deeply personal, it's something bigger than our man made creations and ideologies, so simply continue to hold love and compassion in your heart for yourself and others without judgement as you step into the new year. Offer and ask for forgiveness, humbly, within, we're all human and make mistakes.
There is a wonderful word in Sanskrit which I offer you to perhaps sit with and take with you into the New Year as I sign off with my last newsletter of the year...
MUDITA, it means sympathetic joy, the pleasure that arises from delighting in other people's good fortune and well-being. Even when we are facing tragedy or difficulty ourselves, to truly (without envy) cultivate happiness and joy for another is something we can all work on a little more this coming year. Because really at the core of our hearts, we all want the same things, to be happy, to be healthy, to feel valued and to be loved.
I wish you and your families and loved ones a truly blessed and happy holiday season, and a merry merry Christmas!
With love and gratitude
